The Mercedes-AMG G 63 is an iconic high-performance luxury SUV that combines a hand-built 4.0-litre biturbo V8 with three locking differentials for exceptional off-road capability, all wrapped in a distinctive, boxy design. For the 2024 model year, it is enhanced by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, which not only improves efficiency and smoothness but also delivers an additional 20 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque at low speeds, sharpening throttle response and off-the-line acceleration.
In total, the powertrain produces 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, delivered through a nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT automatic transmission with permanent 4MATIC all-wheel drive. Despite its upright, boxy aerodynamics, the G 63 can sprint from 0–62 mph in as little as 4.3 seconds, with a top speed electronically limited to 137 mph.
The most significant mechanical advancement is the introduction of AMG Active Ride Control suspension. This sophisticated hydraulic system replaces conventional mechanical anti-roll bars, allowing the G-Wagen to remain remarkably flat during high-speed cornering while simultaneously increasing wheel articulation for improved off-road grip.
The vehicle rides on a robust ladder-frame chassis with independent double-wishbone front suspension, a rigid rear axle, three locking differentials, and a low-range gearbox. Drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, Trail, Rock, and Sand.
Standard equipment includes the AMG-specific Panamericana grille, multi-beam LED headlights, stainless steel side-exit exhaust pipes, keyless go, an electric sliding sunroof, and 20-inch wheels. Larger 21 and 22-inch wheels are available, along with exclusive ‘MANUFAKTUR’ paint schemes.
Inside, the cabin features the latest MBUX infotainment system, including augmented-reality navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant. A standout technical feature is the “Transparent Bonnet” function, which uses camera technology to project a view of the terrain directly beneath the engine onto the central display, aiding precise off-road manoeuvring.
The interior is trimmed in Nappa leather, complemented by customisable ambient lighting. It features heated electrically adjustable seats with memory function, three-zone climate control, and a premium Burmester sound system.
