2006 Porsche 911 (997.1) GT3
Key Points: Sport Chrono Package Plus, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Bi-Xenon Lighting System
The Porsche 911 997.1 GT3, produced between 2006 and 2008, represents a high watermark for analogue sports cars. Built using the stiffer body shell of the four-wheel-drive Carrera 4, but entirely rear-wheel drive, the first-generation 997 GT3 was highly focused on blending pure motorsport heritage with precision on both the road and the racetrack. It was famously one of the last iterations to feature the legendary, race-derived 3.6-litre Mezger flat-six engine paired with traditional hydraulic steering.
The heart of the 997.1 GT3 is its naturally aspirated 3.6-litre power plant, which delivers 415 bhp at 7,600 rpm and 405 Nm of torque at 5,500 rpm. It utilises multi-point indirect fuel injection, titanium connecting rods, and a true dry-sump lubrication system with an external oil tank to ensure uninterrupted oil flow under extreme cornering forces. Power is directed exclusively to the rear wheels via a reinforced six-speed manual transmission with a dual-mass flywheel and shortened shift throws. The engine spins freely up to a staggering 8,400 rpm redline, enabling the 1,395 kg coupe to sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 194 mph.
The 997.1 marked a major technological shift by introducing adaptive damping to the GT3 family as standard equipment via Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). The system offers two selectable modes: "Normal" for varying road surfaces and a firmer "Sport" mode calibrated specifically to minimise body roll and maximise mechanical grip on smooth racetracks. The chassis rides on lightweight 19-inch aluminium wheels wrapped in track-focused sports tyres. Power is managed through an asymmetrical mechanical limited-slip differential providing a 28% locking factor under acceleration and 40% on overrun, working alongside a switchable, electronic Traction Control system adapted from the Carrera GT.
Visually, the car is defined by its aerodynamics, leading with a distinct front apron featuring five aggressive air intakes, a black plastic lower spoiler lip, and an upper exhaust vent situated ahead of the aluminium front luggage lid to extract radiator heat. The profile features unique side skirts, while the rear showcases an adjustable, two-stage double rear wing and central dual-round exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear bumper. To save weight, the car came factory-fitted with a heated rear window made of lightweight thin glass. High-intensity bi-xenon headlights with dynamic range control were also standard equipment.
Inside, the 997.1 GT3 balances weight reduction with an upgraded cabin layout compared to its predecessor. Standard equipment includes hard-backed, Alcantara-trimmed sports seats and an identical delete configuration for the rear seats to save weight. High-wear touchpoints, including the steering wheel, gear lever, and handbrake handle, are heavily wrapped in Alcantara. Paying homage to the Carrera GT, the instrument cluster is fitted with signature yellow needles and scales, alongside a prominent GT3 logo on the central tachometer.
