1992 Porsche 911 (964) Reimagined By Singer "Classic Study"
Key Points: Reimagined By Singer in June 2016, All Wheel Drive Example, 4.0 Litre Engine, 6-Speed Manual Gearbox, Electric Sliding Sunroof.
Singer’s reimagined ‘Classic Study’ Porsche 911 represents one of the most refined expressions of the modern restomod movement, combining heritage design with advanced engineering and obsessive craftsmanship. Developed by Singer Vehicle Design, founded by Rob Dickinson, the car is not simply a restored Porsche 911 (964), but a ‘reimagining’ of what the air-cooled 911 could have been without the constraints of mass production or regulation. It blends the iconic long-hood styling of the 1960s with the structural base of a 1990s chassis, creating a seamless fusion of eras.
Each build begins with a complete strip-down of the donor car to its steel monocoque, which is reinforced before being fitted with lightweight carbon-fibre body panels. These panels not only reduce weight but are crafted and installed with exceptional precision, often surpassing modern factory standards. Design details such as refined panel gaps, classic bumper treatments, and custom LED-integrated lighting maintain a vintage aesthetic while subtly modernising the car. The paintwork alone can take hundreds of hours, reflecting the level of detail applied throughout.
Mechanically, the Classic Study is as impressive as it is beautiful. Its naturally aspirated, air-cooled flat-six engines, developed with Cosworth and Ed Pink Racing Engines, are typically offered in 3.8 or 4.0-litre forms, producing up to 400hp. However, the focus is on responsiveness and character rather than outright figures, with individual throttle bodies and bespoke tuning delivering sharp, linear power. A reworked six-speed manual transmission enhances driver engagement, while the chassis features advanced Öhlins dampers and Brembo brakes. Weighing around 1,200–1,300kg, the car offers modern handling precision while preserving the classic rear-engine feel.
Inside, Singer’s “Everything is Important” philosophy is evident in every detail. Interiors are fully bespoke, often featuring leather-weave upholstery, brass accents, and a signature orange tachometer. Clients can tailor every element, from colours to materials, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind cars. Build times typically exceed a year, reflecting the depth of customisation and craftsmanship involved.
The driving experience is widely regarded as the defining feature. The Classic Study retains the analogue, air-cooled character lost in many modern performance cars, yet delivers contemporary levels of reliability and usability. With sharp throttle response, communicative steering and balanced dynamics, it is often described as the ultimate evolution of the classic 911 concept.
With production capped at around 450 units and orders closed in 2022, the Classic Study has become a highly sought-after collector’s item. Values frequently exceed original build costs, reinforcing its status as both an engineering achievement and a cultural icon. It has also influenced the wider automotive world, inspiring other high-end restomod projects and redefining what a classic car can become when reimagined without compromise.
